Mental Health Art Its Okay to Not Be Okay

I've had this mail written upwardly since Earth Suicide Prevention Solar day and it's been sitting in my drafts whilst I've contemplated when to post it. Information technology is always difficult to pluck upward the courage to have a chat about mental health, when there are so many negative connotations attached to information technology. Nevertheless, this is something we can no longer fear as a society and I feel it's and so of import to speak upwards about information technology! It's something and so close to my heart, with having personal feel and likewise wanting to pursue a career in Psychology, and I actually hope I can shed some light as to why it'due south so important to talk about.

Mental illness is more credible in our society than ever before with more than and more people reaching out for help each mean solar day. Although it's much more accepted than it used to be, we tin can't plow a bullheaded eye to the fact that at that place'due south still so much negative stigma surrounding mental illness. A mental disorder should non exist dismissed but considering there are no broken bones involved, a cleaved mind is just as deteriorating. It may not be a visible illness, but it doesn't hateful it's not in that location.

Liverpool Central Library – If you happen to alive almost Liverpool, this is the perfect infinite to go away and remember.

It's thought that 1 in 4 people will suffer from a mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives. Just permit that sink in for a minute. Retrieve about it next time yous're on the bus to work, eating dinner with your family or walking through a crowded street. You lot tin can walk by hundreds of people per day who are suffering and have no idea. It'due south almost certain that someone you know and love has experienced a mental affliction in the past/could be experiencing it right now and nigh likely suffering in silence, as 2/three of those with a diagnosable mental affliction will never seek help.

The Globe Health Organisation have estimated that every 40 seconds, somebody commits suicide and they believe that by 2020, this will increase to i death every 20 seconds. Although this sounds terrifying, we can do something about it.

Every bit a society and as a community, we need to start talking about mental health, accept a stand and end the silence. We need to be a friend, a shoulder to cry on and a manus to hold. If you lot know someone who hasn't been doing too well lately, drop them a bulletin. If you haven't spoken to someone in a while, permit them know y'all're thinking about them. It's the little things that can really make a departure to someones life. Negative stigma is the largest obstacle to recovery and if we can eliminate that, we are already half way there.

When I was sick, I was young and afraid. I truly believed that I was trapped and couldn't talk to anyone every bit I didn't know how they would react. I felt completely alone in a world that I didn't think I could handle anymore and all I did was push people abroad to sink farther into my thoughts. One of the main things I believed is that I was selfish. I had a roof above my head, food in my refrigerator and the most amazing family and friends, then why did I experience this mode? I couldn't find a reason as to why I wanted to stay in bed all day, avoid everyone and everything, so I didn't have the right to experience upset… right? Wrecking your head trying to pivot-point the definitive cause of your mental affliction isn't worth information technology, as information technology doesn't have to string from i traumatic life event. Mental illness is but similar many physical illnesses, the onset can begin at whatever time with no apparent cause. Don't kick yourself for being downwardly.

Recovery tin brainstorm with treatment, a conversation, a hug from a loved one, a mean solar day spent in bed watching Netflix, a stroll to articulate your caput, surrounding yourself with people who care, who can reassure yous that really, everything is going to be okay. Take that risk, wear what makes y'all happy fifty-fifty if you get stared at by old people, consume the pasta that is 102% of your daily fat intake, accept a mental health day and give up all responsibility, as long equally you know yous can get back on track the side by side twenty-four hours. Take upwards a hobby that you've e'er been interested in, acquire how to play the sport or musical instrument you lot claimed to on your CV. Practise what makes yous happy and you'll find yourself over again.

Recovery is hard but talking makes information technology run so much smoother, and knowing that I could finally finish bottling up how I felt was similar a light shining through a tunnel I had spent years walking down with no clear destination. Years on, I can finally say that I am fully recovered and so happy with where I am, who I am (autonomously from maybe my obsession with carbs) (especially pasta) and the support I have. I am so lucky to have friends, family unit and a fellow who support me no matter what and shower me with love 25/8.

My journey has inspired me to study Psychology at University and pursue my dream of helping others to overcome their struggles. To convince them that in the finish, happiness is achievable and life volition go on. Mental affliction is an invisible killer, but together we can bring it into the lite.

I apologise if this is a morbid topic merely information technology's something I feel so strongly about and I believe that talking about mental health is then important. Hopefully one day, stigmatisation will be a problem of the past. But for now, thank you so much for reading! If y'all do feel a little downward, I've attached a picture of me as a child to make you experience better.
